Visiting the Queen (& Saving Your Pence) in the Highest Season
Destinations: London

You can join the Queen in London this June, at the height of her Golden Jubilee celebrations, and stay for as little as $45 per person per night (sharing a double room). To quote directly from an old British sitcom ("Are You Being Served?"), "How do they do it, you may ask?"

You do it by staying with Coach House London Vacation Rentals, which specializes in short term renting out of apartments, coach houses and the like. They say they have prices as low as the above-mentioned $45 in The Coach House, an old Victorian garage for horses and carriages, and that this price includes a big English breakfast (kippers, anyone?)

Some of their other rentals include a three-bedroom apartment in the heart of fashionable Knightsbridge, sleeping 6 or 7 persons, from $330 per night ($47 per person if there are 7). Your own cottage in London can be rented for a family of 5 for $215 a night ($43 per person). Going upscale a bit, stay in a late Georgian, typically English Cottage sleeping 5 for $250 a night ($50 per person). The owner is a titled Lady, who is said to come from one of the oldest families in England and who traces her ancestry back to a wife (one of many) of Henry VIII.

June has always been the height of the London season, and this year is particularly so, with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, from June 1 to 4th. The celebrations go on all year, actually, but reach their peak in June, with the Queen's Birthday parade (Trooping the Colour) on June 1, 8 and 15, with rehearsals on the first two dates, the real thing on the 15th. Tickets are sold out, but you can watch with the crowd. Details online here.

Also in June is Royal Ascot (June 18-22, http://www.ascot-authority.co.uk/) and Derby Day (June 10, http://www.epsomderby.com/) for horse (and fashion) lovers, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships (June 24 to July 7, http://www.wimbledon.org/), and the opening of The Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition (June 11 to August 19, http://www.royalacademy.org.uk/).
